  • 80+ Sites we look after
  • 60 sec Between uptime checks

Newbird keeps websites, online stores and web apps from being hacked, defaced or knocked offline. From our offices in Buffalo and New York City, we patch, watch and back up more than 80 sites every day, and we clean up sites that have already been broken into.

What website cybersecurity covers

Website cybersecurity means keeping the software behind your site current, keeping attackers out of your admin and your server, noticing trouble within minutes, and being able to put everything back when something goes wrong. It’s a different job from protecting office laptops or email. Most website break-ins we see start with something ordinary: an old plugin, a reused password, or a backup that nobody ever tried to restore.

Why websites get broken into

Attackers rarely choose a website by hand. They scan the internet for software with a known hole, then break into every site that hasn’t fixed it yet. Verizon’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report found that exploiting a known weakness was how attackers got in for 20% of the breaches it studied, a 34% jump on the year before. Ransomware showed up in 88% of breaches at small and mid-sized businesses.

WordPress shows how quickly this moves. Patchstack counted 11,334 new security holes in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, nearly all of them in plugins and themes (State of WordPress Security in 2026). Almost half, 46%, had no fix from the developer when they were made public. For the holes attackers went after hardest, mass attacks started a median of five hours after disclosure. A site that gets updated when someone has a free afternoon is a site waiting its turn.

Newbird’s Website Security Services:

We secure the sites we build and host, and we take on sites other people built. Everything below is work our team does every week. None of it is a plugin we install and forget about.

Every month we rehearse WordPress core, plugin and theme updates on a private copy of your site. We check the pages, forms and checkout on that copy, take a restore point we have confirmed works, and only then update the live site. If anything looks off afterwards, we roll it back. Magento and Adobe Commerce stores get the same process for Adobe’s security patches every two weeks.

Your site sits behind a web application firewall with DDoS protection. We challenge automated login attempts, set up two-step sign-in for admin accounts, remove old users and plugins nobody uses, and add the browser security headers most sites are missing.

We check that your site is up every 60 seconds and scan it for malware. We also follow new security advisories for the exact software your site runs, so a fix is planned the day a hole is announced, not the day it’s used against you.

We keep nightly off-site backups of your files and database, and we practise restoring them. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan.

If your site has already been hacked, we find how the attacker got in, remove the malware and any back doors left behind, and restore clean files. Then we close the hole and give you a plain written account of what happened and what we changed.

Card-skimming code slipped into checkout pages is one of the most common attacks on online stores. On the Magento stores we look after, we check the store’s database every five minutes and its code every hour for changes nobody made on purpose. It’s the kind of control PCI DSS requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1 now ask merchants to have for payment pages, and both became mandatory on March 31, 2025.

Not sure where you stand? We’ll review your site and write up what’s out of date, who has admin access, how the server is set up and what your backups really cover, with the fixes listed in the order we’d do them.

Cybersecurity and New York’s SHIELD Act

If your business holds private information about New York residents, the SHIELD Act expects you to keep reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards that fit the size of your business (General Business Law § 899-bb). Since a December 2024 amendment, § 899-aa also gives you no more than 30 days after discovering a breach to tell the people affected. For most businesses, the website and its forms, accounts and orders are where that private information arrives first.

We aren’t lawyers and won’t pretend to be. What we can do is keep the technical side of your website in good order and write it down, so the conversation with your attorney or insurer starts from facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does website cybersecurity include?

Keeping your site’s software patched, protecting the logins and the server, monitoring for downtime and malware, keeping backups we know we can restore, and responding fast when something gets through. For online stores it also covers the checkout pages, where card skimming happens.

Do you handle office IT security, like laptops and email?

No. We focus on websites, online stores and web apps. We’re happy to work with your IT provider so nothing falls between the two of us.

My website was hacked. What should I do first?

Don’t delete anything yet. Change the passwords for your hosting, website admin and email accounts from a computer you trust, then call us. Keeping the evidence helps us find how the attacker got in, so the same hole isn’t used again a week later.

Can you secure a website you didn’t build?

Yes. We start with a security review, fix what’s urgent, and then keep the site maintained. If the hosting itself is part of the problem, we’ll explain your options, including moving to our hosting.

How much does website security cost?

It depends on the platform, the size of the site and whether it takes payments. Most sites fit into a monthly care plan, and a hacked-site cleanup is quoted on its own. Tell us about your site and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Does the SHIELD Act apply to my business?

It applies to any business, wherever it’s based, that holds private information about New York residents. Small businesses are held to safeguards that are reasonable for their size. Your attorney can confirm how it applies to you.
