A WordPress security service keeps the plugins, theme and WordPress itself up to date, keeps strangers out of your admin, and makes sure there is a clean copy of your site to go back to. Newbird looks after more than 60 WordPress sites from our offices in Buffalo and New York City. We test every update on a private copy of your site before it goes live, and we clean up WordPress sites that have already been hacked.

Where WordPress sites are weak

WordPress itself is rarely the problem. Patchstack counted 11,334 new security holes in the WordPress world in 2025, and only six were in WordPress core, all of them minor (State of WordPress Security in 2026). The other 91% were in plugins and 9% in themes. So most of the work is in the plugins and theme your site runs: knowing which ones have a hole, updating them before attackers get there, and replacing the ones nobody maintains any more.

Why a security plugin isn’t enough

A security plugin is a good start, and most WordPress sites should have one. But it runs inside the site it is protecting. It can’t update your other plugins safely, prove your backups will restore, or tell you that last week’s update broke your contact form.

Firewalls have the same limit. In Patchstack’s 2025 tests, common firewall setups blocked only 12% of attacks aimed at known WordPress holes. Almost half of the holes it tracked, 46%, had no fix from the developer when they were made public. A firewall buys time. Updating the plugin, or removing it when no fix is coming, is what closes the hole.

Paid plugins and themes need the most attention. Patchstack found three times as many holes being used in real attacks in paid components as in free ones. Many paid plugins also can’t update from the dashboard without a current licence, so they sit on an old version for years without anyone noticing.

How we update WordPress without breaking your site

Most WordPress maintenance services press “update all” and hope. An update that breaks a checkout or a form can cost a business more than the hole it fixed, so we never update a live site we haven’t tried first.

  • Plan. We list every plugin, theme and WordPress version on your site and match them against published security holes.
  • Back up. We take a backup and a restore point we have checked will really restore.
  • Rehearse. We update a private copy of your site first. Email, payments and connections to outside services are switched off on the copy, so nothing reaches your customers.
  • Check. On the copy we load every page and try the forms, search and logins. If it’s a store, we also place a full test order with no card.
  • Update. We put exactly the versions that passed onto the live site, then check it again.
  • Watch. We keep an eye on the site for two weeks afterwards and roll back if something breaks late.

You get a plain-English report of what changed. When a security hole is published for a plugin your site runs and a fix exists, that fix doesn’t wait for the next round of updates.

Newbird’s WordPress Security Services:

WordPress core, plugins and themes, updated on a private copy of your site first and checked page by page before the live site is touched. If an update fails on the copy, we fix the cause or hold that one update back and tell you why.

We track down the licences for paid plugins and themes, whether they came from ThemeForest, CodeCanyon or the maker’s own site, so they get updated with everything else instead of being skipped.

We challenge automated login attempts, set up two-step sign-in for admin accounts and remove old users and plugins nobody uses. Fewer ways in means fewer things to defend.

Sites on our hosting sit behind a web application firewall with DDoS protection, which stops a lot of junk traffic before it reaches WordPress.

We check that WordPress’s own files still match the official release, look for back doors hidden in the site’s code, and review the admin accounts so one nobody created stands out.

Daily backups of your files and database on separate backup storage, plus a restore point we test before every update. If something goes wrong, we can put your site back the way it was.

Every update to a WooCommerce store is tried with a full test order on the private copy, so you hear about a broken checkout from us, not from a customer.

If your site has already been hacked, we find how the attacker got in, remove the malware and any back doors, restore clean files and close the hole. Then we explain what happened in plain words.

If we don’t look after your site yet, we review the versions, plugins, admin users and backups, and give you a list of fixes in the order we’d do them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WordPress secure?

Yes, WordPress itself is well looked after. In 2025 only six security holes were reported in WordPress core, all of them minor. The risk comes from plugins, themes and sites that aren’t kept up to date, which is where WordPress security services spend their time.

Is a security plugin enough to protect my WordPress site?

It helps, but it can’t do the whole job. A plugin can block some attacks and warn you about others. It can’t safely update your other plugins, test that your backups restore, or check that an update didn’t break your forms or checkout. That part takes people.

Should I turn on automatic plugin updates?

WordPress already installs its own minor security releases by default, but not plugin or theme updates (WordPress’s own documentation). For a simple blog, automatic plugin updates are better than none. For a business site or a store, an update that breaks a form or checkout can go unnoticed for days, which is why we test updates on a copy before they go live.

Do you update paid plugins and themes?

Yes. Paid plugins and themes often need a current licence before they will update, so they are the ones most often left behind. We find the licence or the maker’s download and update them with everything else.

Can you secure a WordPress site you didn’t build?

Yes. We start with a security review, fix what’s urgent and then keep the site maintained. If the hosting is part of the problem, we’ll explain your options, including moving to our hosting.

How much do WordPress security services cost?

Most WordPress sites fit into our WordPress care plan, billed monthly. Online stores need a little more, and a hacked-site cleanup is quoted on its own. Tell us about your site and we’ll give you a straight answer.
